There is a trend in using social networking sites for viral marketing. The approach has some merit, and may be a possible approach to promoting services and interacting with a wider pool of potential users.
Within terms of the Open Road project I've been experimenting with the use of Facebook to discuss ICT in the content of the Dinka language. To date posting tot he group has been limited. To be expected. You only expect a small percentage of members to actively participate in discussions. But the issue isn't so much around participation as it is around awareness raising. The group has 456 members currently, most of whom are Dinka.
As more IT solutions and web sites are developed for Dinka. using such social networking tools provides a way of getting information out across a virtual Diaspora.
And hopefully provide a venue where people form specific ethnic and language groups can share their interest in technology and their language.
One of the random odd thoughts going through my head as I try to write a draft of my thesis proposal.
Within the Victorian context, individuals within CALD communities are left to discover technology on their own, at least in the sense of technology that is linguistically and culturally relevant.
